We currently offer 3 popular raw meat treats including Beef Heart, Beef Liver and Chicken Hearts and they are appropriate for dogs of all sizes and ages. Beef Heart and Beef Liver is cut in approximately 1/2 inch bits, making them a perfect size for any dog but may be more easily managed by smaller dogs. Chicken Hearts are trimmed of excess fat and then halved. Their size is approximately 3/4" wide and 1"- 1 1/2" long, making them great treats for larger dogs. They can, however, be easily broken into smaller pieces if you have a small dog. Always provide your pet with fresh drinking water and feed treats under supervision. Treats may be re-hydrated back to their raw state by soaking in warm water for 3-5 minutes should you have an older dog or a dog with dental issues and in need of a softer treat. Keeva's Krunchies now has Freeze Dried Chicken Feet Chews available as well!
All Meats are purchased fresh from a local butcher on "Fresh Meat Friday." Meats are hand cut, pre-frozen and then freeze dried in small batches. The freeze drying process protects flavor and nutritional value of the meats being prepared and there are no additional preservatives or other ingredients used in the preparation of the meats. When each batch is finished, it is carefully weighed out and promptly packaged in a windowed mylar bag. Each bag also contains a desiccant packet to help ensure freshness. These packets are food-safe and are composed of bentonite clay. They are non-toxic, acid-free and environmentally-friendly, making them a great choice over silica gel packets. Bags are then heat sealed to prevent tampering and ensure freshness.
Yes, freeze dried products can look strange! It's not uncommon for these treats to have dull gray or white spots where the bits were froze together or glossy sides which are the outside membranes of liver. It's not uncommon for liver to look "crystalized." You may also see small "oily" spots on chicken hearts due to the fat deposits surrounding the heart. You may also see parts of blood vessels, dried blood, membranes or ligaments just like you'd see when buying meat for yourself.
Freeze Drying (also known as lyophilized or cryodesiccated) is a low temperature dehydration process that requires freezing the product, lowering the pressure in a chamber and removing the water from the product by sublimation. This process of removing water and moisture from the meats is required to produce a shelf stable product. This process can be reversed by soaking or exposing the meats to water...the meats can even absorb moisture from the air!
Please follow the safe handling directives, keep contents dry and the bag closed when not in use and you should have no problems with your purchase.
